Because once you dig into the history of this much-maligned chore, you’ll find that it’s a lot more fascinating than you might have thought. And dig, we did. Below, we’ll run through some of our favourite laundry facts that show that it’s really not as boring as you think!
1. The Majority of Clothes Dirt Is Invisible
It’s easy to spot obvious dirt marks on an item of clothing. But did you know that those marks are just the tip of the iceberg? The vast majority of clothes' dirt is invisible! If you’ve worn an item more than a couple of times, it’ll likely contain a lot of sweat, product residue, and dead skin cells. If you need some motivation to use our laundry service on a regular basis, then there you have it.
2. Vikings Cleaned Their Clothes Using the Ocean
The Vikings may have had their sights on conquering the world, but they also knew the importance of clean clothes. And when you’re spending weeks or even months at sea, you have to come up with some smart ways to keep your outfits fresh. If they were in modern-day Canada, they could have dropped their dirty laundry at our Vancouver branch, but alas we weren’t in business back then. They did their best to keep their outfits fresh by placing them in bags and dragging them through the ocean water. It’s better than nothing!
3. The Washing Machine Is More Than 240 Years Old
The first washing machine dates all the way back to 1782 when British inventor Henry Sidgier made his new invention available to the public. It was a pretty simplistic device compared with modern washing machines, but hey, you have to start somewhere.
4. Dirty Clothes Used to Be Mailed Home
You don’t have to look too far to find a laundry machine these days, but that wasn’t always the case. In the 1950s, college students would mail their dirty laundry back to their families, who would then clean and dry the clothes before sending them back. We don’t know how long that whole process took, but we’re pretty confident it was much longer than the 24-hour turnaround time we offer students in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto.
5. The Invention of the Clothes Dryer
Before the advent of electric dryers, people relied on the natural elements to dry their clothes. The first automatic electric clothes dryer was introduced in the early 20th century, liberating households from the constraints of weather-dependent drying.
6. Laundry Symbols Have a Universal Language
Those tiny symbols on clothing tags aren't just random designs. They form a universal language understood globally, conveying essential care instructions. From washing and drying to ironing, these symbols simplify the laundry process for people of various linguistic backgrounds.
